Our recent wedding styled shoot at a ranch, Marin County CA brought together a classic-vintage theme and a metallic, earthy twist. The shoot brought together strands of the Pantone Color of the Year, Greenery, a touch of the metallic theme, with the beautiful California setting of Slide Ranch, Marin County overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
We tended towards a blue-green theme in deference to the ocean color and the strong eucalyptus vibe. The new Farm-to-Table building we were in at Slide Ranch, an educational farm facility on the Marin coast, combined modern design elements like a corrugated metal exterior and black window-frames, so we wanted to complement that with several metallic touches.
The models for the shoot were Jazmin and Colin, long-time friends and California natives from Chico. Hair and make-up was provided by Sol Flores, a talented and versatile MUA and stylist based in Vacaville and covering the Bay Area and beyond. The long lashes and soft curls give a hint of old-world glamour while staying true to the natural beauty that surrounded us.
Jazmin wore a lace dress from The Wedding Party, Berkeley. The boutique, which has been run by Clara and Jennifer for 15 years, caters to brides whose tastes diverge from traditional poufy bridal gown.
Gowns that form The Wedding Party’s collection are chosen to appeal to the contemporary bride: savvy, hip and stylish, looking for a fresh take on traditional bridal attire. This all fitted the alternative theme that my shoots have. In a perfect marriage of eclecticism, the dress ‘matched’ beautifully with Jazmin’s well-worn black vintage boots which meshed well with the wild & outdoorsy setting.
Colin wore his own blue button-down shirt from Bootleg, Chico. Paired with beige chinos, a simple black bow tie and suspenders, it made a bold yet understated style statement. Finishing off Colin’s outfit were the cowboy-style boots, also from Bootleg, that injected even more personality and ranch-style into the dapper ensemble.
To keep things really elegant and stylish we went with delicate, ornate, vintage plate settings courtesy of Cherry’s Very Vintage Rentals and handmade calligraphy flourishes from Paperlove Me Calligraphy. Giulissa’s calligraphy is all about delivering the most beautiful one-of-a-kind designs and handmade products.
Cherry’s china is so dainty and a lot of her pieces are unique. She speaks with such enthusiasm and knowledge about every one of the plates and crockery items (not to mention furniture and decorative items) in her collection! Cherry lives and breathes these wonderful heirlooms, full of character and history. The golden goblets which formed something of a centerpiece of our table display were picked up on a recent trip to Kansas, which Cherry had just returned from two days before. A fitting and very timely find!
Cake that was as delicious as it was visually stunning was provided by Natalie Pearce of Natty Cakes, which operates out of Kitchener Oakland and focuses on locally sourced and organic ingredients to make simple, familiar and elegant desserts.
The gold and silver leaf & blue-green foliage arrangement atop the cake was a visual feast! It was created by Anna Campbell of FloraCultural Society, a network which unites people interested in the beauty of sustainably grown flowers and plant based goods.
Another noteworthy detail from our table display was the bronze giraffes which belong to Steph Price, who provided the florals for the shoot, but specializes in wedding planning services in her business Steph Price Productions. The giraffes were a childhood favorite of Steph’s, and were once her grandmother’s but now hold a place in Steph’s home, close to her heart. All the eucalyptus used here was also from her Grammie’s backyard, a deliberate choice which chimes with our venue. She also used locally grown white tulips, red roses, baby’s breath and New Zealand tea tree.
Slide Ranch’s own philosophy through its educational outreach programs is to cultivate healthy minds and bodies and foster environmental stewardship among the younger generation in particular. We kept those goals in mind with this styled wedding shoot, and it was a real delight assembling a locally-based team. Everyone’s weblinks and IG names are below.
