This styled shoot set on the beaches of San Francisco, California, combines a sun-bleached, beach-boho theme with a distinctly soft, light and feminine style. For this I wanted to portray a different kind of emotion, far removed from the usual exuberance of a bridal shoot: melancholy.
The story is of a bride who is jilted on her wedding day. Here we have a beautiful, sad young woman, alone on a beach still dressed in her elegant wedding dress, gazing to sea.
She walks along a desolate beach with her wedding bouquet and old suitcase with a San Jose luggage tag. All of this sets the scene. Sometimes, things are just not meant to be.
My buzzwords for the shoot were eclectic, quirky, nostalgic, romantic, shabby chic, old world, with a touch of a Victoriana, revival theme. We wanted to keep all elements of the shoot, subtle, simple, soft and feminine. Everything from the vintage-styled props used, the lighting and the post-processing techniques, all played its part in evoking the melancholy, feminine mood.
The colors I had in mind were pale pastel, pinks, washed out, yellow sun and light wood. My textures were driftwood, rough sand, soft lace, warm breeze and porcelain skin.
Brittany braved the cold weather and did a superb and admirable job of pretending she was in sunny LA rather than windy San Francisco! Luckily the fog held off and we were able to capture these magical images on a cold but bright Ocean Beach just before sunset.
My huge, heartfelt thanks go out to the amazing creative team that came together to make all of this possible.
The team I brought together included our model, Brittany plus a skilled and versatile make up artist Ebony Cheri, a gifted and imaginative floral designer Erin Miller from The Floral Times, and a very cool and visionary wedding cake-maker who delights with every bite, Kathleen Di Manti from A Spoonful of Sugar Cakes.
Marshaleen Cornwall of ML Cornwall Films put together a beautiful film showing a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the shoot and some gorgeous aerial shots to boot. Scroll down to watch it!
Our on-set stylist was Cat Rodriguez who runs online clothing boutique Simply 1 Love and offers bespoke styling services in the San Francisco bay area. My assistant was Regie Lantin who runs photobooth service Phil-Foto.
