There couldn’t have been a more appropriate location for Christina & Nathan’s engagement shoot than Battery Godfrey, with its chilly, charming, edgy chic. Nathan is in the National Guard, Field Artillery Regiment and this derelict World War Two artillery site for coastal defense seemed like a nod to his military background.
Christina enjoys dancing in her spare time – mainly jazz, hip hop and Afrobeats – and this location lent itself well to the pop of colors of her dance outfit against the neutral concrete grays and white sky and sea. See – perfect!
Another great perk of this location is that it isn’t a super crowded spot. The San Francisco coastline and the beaches of the Bay Area in general are popular for engagements and shoots of all kinds.
However some lovely areas are SO crowded that you literally have to wait your turn. That isn’t ideal for shy types or for maximizing time & flow of the shoot.
Battery Godfrey offers not only the disused building itself, with its many framing devices, stairs, roofs to climb on, trees and coastal views but also the Golden Gate Bridge! Plus, it’s a hop, skip and a jump from Langdon Court Parking lot – no hike required.
It was super windy when we shot in February and the couple handled it amazingly! Nate gave Christina his jacket which made for some cute photos. Wind can make for some beautiful photos as there is movement in hair and clothes which adds a stunning dynamism to pictures. Also: more opportunities for laughter and silliness.
The couple has been together for 9 years and will be tying the knot at their destination wedding in Mexico in the near future. They live in Oakland and love anything involving food and culture. They’re so lovely to be around and fun and made my work easy with their cuteness and the beautiful ways they express their love.
That’s what I want to bring out and capture most in engagement and wedding shoots – the natural ways that a couple interacts. The little things that they do without even realizing it, be in a snuggle, a kiss, a way of holding hands.
With these two, it was the way that Christina buries her face into Nate’s neck and cheek, nestling into him. When a couple’s been together this long, there is an ease and familiarity that’s so beautiful and interesting to me, and I believe it shows in the pictures!
Congrats Christina and Nathan and well done for rockin’ your engagement session!
