This OMCA wedding gives me all the feels! It was a real honor to work with such a cool couple! They both have such wicked style and wanted their wedding to be anything but cookie-cutter. The big day felt like a true representation of who they are, and honored their journey.

Outdoor ceremony at OMCA wedding

Jamie and Cang had a beautiful wedding ceremony at OMCA – the Oakland Museum of California in gorgeous late fall weather.

The sunshine was soft and subtle, casting a warm glow on the gray concrete mid-century modernist building where California’s history is housed.

OMCA opened nearly 50 years ago and was designed by Pritzker prize-winning architect Kevin Roche. For a photographer who is obsessed with storytelling, a museum is an inspiring choice as a wedding venue.

And not just any museum! This three-tiered concrete building is the result of three separate mergers in the early part of the 20th Century. It tells the story of our beautiful state of California through visual art, history and natural sciences.

The OMCA’s goal is to “tell the extraordinary story of California.”

Special note

Please note: As of 2020 the OMCA will not be accepting wedding bookings until major construction is complete.

Please contact Catherine Kitz, Events Manager at the Museum for more.

Spaces at OMCA

The outdoor spaces are just as special. Open-air architectural features are their terraced roof gardens, patios, outdoor sculpture, a large lawn area, and a koi pond.

After the short outdoor ceremony on the OMCA’s Peace Terrace we did a few group photographs.

Following this, the couple and I used our time to grab couples portraits in different spots around the Museum. We used lawns, the art galleries and the butterfly mural located in the outdoor public seating area. (edit – that has now gone)

There truly were photo opportunities around every corner. A venue as large and diverse as this really warrants some time to take full advantage of all the Museum has to offer.

Of course, the couple’s guests had plenty to keep themselves entertained during the couples’ portraits.

Friday Nights at OMCA are among my favorite regular museum events.

If you are planning an OMCA wedding I’d love to hear your plans! My album is available at the Museum, just ask Catherine!

Membership to OMCA comes with your wedding booking

Jamie mentioned to me on her wedding day that currently, every couple marries at OMCA receives a free Museum membership as a wedding gift! Imagine that! You can revisit your wedding venue as much as you like for years to come!

It was a special place for this couple, as they have lived for years in an apartment that overlooks Lake Merritt.
